Abstract: Yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ, 8% mol Y2O3) membranes with expected composition were coated on porous alumina substrates by a dip-coating process
with YSZ sol, which was prepared by sonicated dispersing YSZ powder in ethanol. The YSZ powder was synthesized by co-precipitation from inorganic aqueous solutions
of ZrOCl2·8H2O and Y(NO3)3·6H2O, followed by azeotropic distillation and sintered at 600℃ for 2h. Crystalline structure of the
YSZ powder was characterized by X-ray diffraction. Particle size of the sol was determined by laser scattering measurement. The mean pore diameter of an unsupported
YSZ membrane was about 6nm as investigated by nitrogen isothermal desorption measurement. Investigation with scanning electron microscopy and nitrogen permeation testing
showed that the membranes were crack-free.
