Abstract: The thermal stresses in a functionally graded ceramic tool were calculated by using the finite element method. Results show that the thermal stresses in the functionally graded ceramic tool are smaller than in the common ceramic tools in high cutting speed conditions, which was confirmed by the cutting experiment. This phenomenon indicates that functionally graded ceramic tools are more suitable for high- speed cutting than conventional cutting tools.
