Abstract: A nanostructured zirconia coating was fabricated successfully by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS). The microstructure and phase composition of the coating were characterized with SEM, TEM and XRD, respectively. The granulated powders
with sizes in the range of 15 to 40μm have excellent flowability and are suitable for plasma spraying process. The grain size of the as-sprayed zirconia
coating has a distribution range from 60 to 120nm, and the grain boundary is clear. The as-sprayed nanostructured ZrO_2 coatings are composed of tetragonal and cubic
phases of zirconia, and their porosity and tensile strength are about 7% and 45MPa respectively.
